Choose your business name

RETURN to Small Business Resources

Choosing a business name isn’t just a creative exercise—it’s a strategic decision that affects branding, marketing, and even legal protection. A strong name should be memorable, meaningful, and usable across platforms. Here’s how to approach it step by step:

1. Start with your brand identity

Before brainstorming names, get clear on what your business stands for:

  • What do you offer?
  • Who do you serve?
  • What feeling or message do you want to convey?

A landscaping company might want something natural and grounded, while a tech startup might lean toward modern and innovative.

2. Keep it simple and memorable

The best names are:

  • Easy to spell and pronounce
  • Short and clean
  • Easy to remember

If people can’t say it, they won’t search for it or recommend it.

3. Make it unique—but not confusing

You want to stand out, but not at the cost of clarity. Avoid:

  • Names that are too similar to competitors
  • Overly clever spellings that are hard to understand

A name should give at least a hint of what you do.

4. Check availability everywhere

This is where many people make mistakes. Before you commit:

Consistency across all platforms makes marketing much easier.

5. Do a trademark search

To avoid legal issues, search the United States Patent and Trademark Office database.
If your name is already trademarked in your industry, you may need to choose another.

6. Think long-term

Avoid names that might limit growth:

  • “Lima Lawn Care” might be restrictive if you expand beyond Lima
  • “Joe’s Plumbing” might feel too small if you build a large company

Pick something that can grow with you.

7. Test it with real people

Say the name out loud. Ask others:

  • What does it make you think of?
  • Is it easy to remember?
  • Does it sound trustworthy?

You’ll quickly spot issues you didn’t notice yourself.

8. Secure it quickly

Once you find a name that checks all the boxes:

  • Register your business name
  • Buy the domain
  • Lock in social handles

Good names don’t stay available for long.

Final thought

A great business name doesn’t have to be perfect—it just needs to be clear, usable, and aligned with your brand. You can build meaning into a name over time through good service and marketing.
