If you’re starting a small business in Ohio, getting the right tax ID numbers is a key step. There are a few different IDs you may need depending on how your business is set up and what you do.
1. Get a Federal Tax ID (EIN)
Most businesses need an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service.
Who needs an EIN?
- You have employees
- You operate as an LLC, partnership, or corporation
- You want to open a business bank account
- You want to separate personal and business taxes
How to apply:
- Go to the IRS website and apply online (free)
- You’ll get your EIN immediately after completing the application
👉 If you’re a sole proprietor with no employees, you can use your Social Security Number—but an EIN is still recommended.
2. Register with the State of Ohio
After your EIN, you’ll register for state-level taxes through the Ohio Department of Taxation.
Common Ohio tax registrations:
You may need one or more of these depending on your business:
- Vendor’s License (Sales Tax ID)
Required if you sell physical goods or taxable services- Lets you collect and remit sales tax
- Employer Withholding Tax Account
Required if you have employees- Used to withhold state income tax from wages

4. Local Requirements (Sometimes Needed)
Depending on your city or county, you might also need:
- A local income tax account
- City-level business registration (Lima)
5. Keep Your Info Organized
Once you have your tax IDs:
- Store your EIN confirmation letter
- Track all state account numbers
- Use them consistently on tax filings and payroll
