Get tax ID numbers

RETURN to Small Business Resources

If you’re starting a small business in Ohio, getting the right tax ID numbers is a key step. There are a few different IDs you may need depending on how your business is set up and what you do.

1. Get a Federal Tax ID (EIN)

Most businesses need an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service.

Who needs an EIN?

  • You have employees
  • You operate as an LLC, partnership, or corporation
  • You want to open a business bank account
  • You want to separate personal and business taxes

How to apply:

  • Go to the IRS website and apply online (free)
  • You’ll get your EIN immediately after completing the application

👉 If you’re a sole proprietor with no employees, you can use your Social Security Number—but an EIN is still recommended.

2. Register with the State of Ohio

After your EIN, you’ll register for state-level taxes through the Ohio Department of Taxation.

You may need one or more of these depending on your business:

3. Register Through Ohio Business Gateway

Most registrations are done online through the
Ohio Business Gateway

What you can do there:

  • Apply for a Vendor’s License
  • Register for employer taxes
  • File and pay business taxes
  • Manage all your Ohio tax accounts in one place

4. Local Requirements (Sometimes Needed)

Depending on your city or county, you might also need:

  • A local income tax account
  • City-level business registration (Lima)

5. Keep Your Info Organized

Once you have your tax IDs:

  • Store your EIN confirmation letter
  • Track all state account numbers
  • Use them consistently on tax filings and payroll

Simple Breakdown

  • EIN (Federal) → From the IRS
  • Vendor’s License → For selling goods/services
  • Employer Accounts → If you hire workers
  • CAT Registration → If revenue is high enough
